Salcombe was first recorded in 1244 and became an important fishing village by the sixteenth century
Historically, Salcombe was involved in sailing and shipbuilding, namely in the production of the Salcombe Schooner, aided by its sheltered position along the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary. A network of ferries operates in and around Salcombe, providing access to a number of local sandy beaches
Today, Salcombe is a popular tourist resort, known for its yachting and sailing attractions. Wreck diving is also popular in the area, including diving the 17th century remains of the Salcombe Cannon Wreck. The sailing club was founded in 1922
The town has a RNLI lifeboat station, which was established in 1869. There is also a lifeboat museum
